Types of Underlayment

Backer Board

A backer board is needed to provide a stable, durable, and moisture-resistant surface for installing tile. This type of underlayment is highly versatile: you can use a backer board for tile walls and backsplashes, as underlayment for a bathroom floor or for creating sturdy tile countertops. When selecting a backer board for tile projects, there are a variety of factors to consider such as cost, board weight, and specified use.

Underlayment Sheet

Underlayment sheets are used primarily to create a smooth, flat surface for the flooring material, provide cushioning, reduce sound transmission, and in some cases, offer moisture protection. However, for a thoroughly waterproofed tile floor underlayment, we recommend adding an additional waterproofing membrane layer.

Uncoupling Mat

The primary function of an uncoupling mat is to separate the tile layer from the substrate to allow independent movement between the two. This is particularly important in cases where the substrate might be prone to shifts, expansions, or contractions, which can put the grout and tile at risk of cracking. An uncoupling mat is meant to be used as a standalone underlayment, so there is no need for a backer board or other underlayment layer.

Other Underlayment Supplies

Lath

For Portland cement mud bed underlayment, a lath is necessary. A mud bed underlayment helps provide a smooth, even surface that is ideal for tiling. This wire mesh reinforces the structural integrity of the underlayment by distributing weight evenly.

Membranes

For some shower tile underlayment, you may need to add an additional floor tile membrane. Adding a specialized waterproofing membrane layer can help ensure the substrate and other layers beneath your shower tile stay totally free of moisture.

Finishing Materials

Some types of underlayment require specialized products such as sealant or fasteners. For the best results, be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure all your project materials are compatible.
